Bad Battery or Faulty Alternator? How to Differentiate the Difference and Find a Fix

Dear AutoExpert

Is there a way to tell the difference when it’s a faulty battery or malfunctioning alternator? I’m experiencing trouble when starting my car, despite it having some power (dome lights, panel lights, and power locks still function). I’ve tried charging it for a few days, which usually works for a dead battery, but I’ve had no luck this time. Any advice would be appreciated. –Robert

John: There’s a chance that the trickle charge isn’t working properly, because the battery has reached a state of depletion where it can no longer maintain a satisfactory charge.

Adam: But hold off on buying a new battery right away, because there’s several other possibilities that need to be explored before making any decisions just yet.

John: It’s entirely possible that your battery is already fully charged and the reason your car might not be cranking-over could be due to a faulty starter, a malfunctioning neutral safety switch, a defective clutch interlock (if it’s a manual transmission), or could even a poor connection between the battery and the starter. (I’ve seen that a lot)

Adam: I suggest you first talk with a friend or family member (someone who can give you a jump-start). If the car starts successfully with a jump, it indicates a potential issue with the battery. After starting the vehicle, you can then drive it to a nearby garage and request a battery test for a conclusive assessment.

John: If you’re unable to get the car jump-started, then it’s a strong possibility the issue lies with a faulty starter or alternator for that matter.

Adam: If you’ve been charging the battery for a few days without any success in getting the car to start, it’s highly unlikely that the alternator is to blame. The alternator’s primary function is to charge the battery, and if even the assistance of a charger and boost (jump-start) couldn’t help, it’s safe to rule out the alternator as a potential culprit. Best of luck, Robert.
